Trust the Process

Something cool about being a father is that if you pay attention to or even get involved with what your child is interested in, you can learn a lot. If you’re a parent who just watches our classes and haven’t started learning martial arts with your child, you can relax, this isn’t about making you feel guilty; although we do have adult classes and family classes where you can train with your kid. No, this is about my developing interest in NFL football thanks to my son.

What I have learned from watching football is that the average play takes 7 seconds. That’s a small amount of time compared to the average 3 hours it takes from the start and finish of a game.  During that time, multiple components are at work to create the outcome. Each team has players that must function together. They can be injured. There can be distractions. Even the wind direction can play a role in determining who wins and who loses. 3 hours in a game. Each team plays 17 games in the regular season, but each play only takes 7 seconds and focusing on each play is what most coaches refer to as ‘the process’ they count on when it comes to forming a strategy to become Super Bowl Champions.

January is a time for New Year’s resolutions and it’s no surprise that most people fail to keep them. According to a 2022 survey by Time2Play, 14.1% of all Canadians don’t even bother making a promise to better themselves.

Let’s look at the usual goals though. Things like saving more money and spending less, dieting, sobriety, getting more active, and quitting smoking can seem like daunting tasks when you realize how much self-discipline it will take for a year. What would happen if you broke that down to each month though? How about a week? There are 365 days in a year, but what if you just tried for one, and then one more? How about being disciplined for multiple 7 second time periods?

Got a goal? Go after it in tiny amounts and trust the process. Go you! Oh, and Go Bills.
