Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Every so often, usually when routines change or motivation dips, the same thoughts show up. Thoughts like,“Everyone’s watching me.” “They’re judging me.” “I don’t fit in yet.” It feels real. It feels convincing. And for many people, it is enough to slow them down or stop them altogether before they ever give themselves a real chance.

The truth is nobody is thinking about you. You matter, but everyone else is too busy worrying about themselves. We all walk into training carrying our own doubts and insecurities. Most people are more focused on how they look, how they are performing, and whether they are doing things right than they are on anyone else in the room.

Psychologists call this the spotlight effect. In one well-known study, people were asked to walk into a room wearing embarrassing T-shirts. They predicted nearly half the room would notice. Fewer than one in four did. Everyone else was too busy thinking, “Do I look okay?” “How much longer is this going to take?”

The same thing happens in our dojo and fitness classes. You might worry about your technique, your stamina, your flexibility, or being “behind.” Meanwhile, the person beside you is worrying about their own training. The instructor is focused on how to help you improve. Nobody is standing there scoring you.

Discomfort does not mean you do not belong. It means you are learning. Feeling awkward does not mean you are failing. It means you are growing. Confidence is built by showing up when it would be easier to stay home and by training when your brain says, “Maybe tomorrow.”

Every class you attend weakens that old story. Every repetition proves it wrong.

So, if you are hesitating, start anyway. If you are struggling, keep going anyway. Focus on your training and let everyone else worry about theirs. That is how real confidence is built. One class at a time.
